After assessing the needs of a market and developing a product or service to meet their needs, you have to come up with a plan for distributing your products or services to customers. You also need to create a promotional plan that helps you advertise your products or services in a way that attracts your target market. The key to coming up with ways to advertise to your target market is conducting thorough research about the types of people who can benefit the most from what you're selling.
1. Create a customer profile that outlines demographic and psychographic information about the target market you want to reach. At minimum, your customer profile should include information such as gender, age, occupation, education level, marital status, hobbies and interest, geographic location and whether your target market owns or rents their homes.
2. Determine where your target customers get their information from when they're ready to buy products or services. Sources may include television commercials, friends and family, social networks, magazines, blogs, forums or consumer review websites. Request media kits or rate cards to see how closely related your target market is to the markets of media you're considering advertising with.
3. Pay attention to what types of advertising your competition uses to attract your target market, as it may give you indication of how and where you should advertise your products and services, and what you should avoid. Take note of where businesses that offer complementary products and services advertise as well.
4. Stay within your marketing budget when you begin to make plans to advertise to your target audience. While you may come up with several tactics, you may wreak havoc on your budget if you try to advertise in too many places at one time.
5. Measure the results of any advertising campaign you use to attract your target market. This will help you determine which efforts are successful and worth repeating and which don't give you a return on your investment. Advertise to attract your audience using proven tactics that produce measurable results.
