The first thing you'll want to do is choose several keywords/phrases that you want to rank for. This is the most important step. If you get this wrong, what you do after does not matter, so choose wisely.
Use a keyword tool and check for average number of searches and competition. Your ultimate goal is to find keywords with a high search volume and low competition. This is usually hard to find, which is why choosing keywords is so important.
It won't do you much good to rank on page 1 of the search engines for a keyword that only gets 10 searches a month. Nor should you choose a keyword with very high competition. Keywords like 'work at home' or 'home based business' might seem obvious to rank for, but there is so much competition for these it's highly unlikely you'll be able to get on the first page. It may take years to break through on highly competitive keywords.
There is a lot that goes into a search engine choosing your website to display on page 1. They look at your domain age, speed of your website, whether it's responsive, social factors, page rank and the value of the content you're displaying.
If you're writing an article using specific keywords, make sure it contains unique, original content that offers the readers value. Do not ever post duplicate content or content of poor quality. Make sure your grammar is perfect and there are no spelling errors. Do not overuse your keyword either. Try to use it every 100 words or so.
Meta tags can be set on each page of your website, but these are less important in today's SEO world. Concentrate more on the speed of your website and make sure it is mobile friendly. Also, you should check to see if it's compatible in all browsers (IE, Chrome, Safari, FireFox, etc.)
There is a lot more involved with SEO, but if you start with a fast website and research your keywords carefully, you should be off to a great start. Spend most of your time researching keywords. I cannot stress this enough. It is the most important factor of SEO!
